Daisuki figure skating
Now you know I’m a big fan of Yuzuru-kun. And in his book he said that Patrick Chan and Daisuke Takahashi are in a different league. So I’ve been watching their programs on Youtube.
羽生君は、パトリック・チャン選手と高橋大輔君には一目置いているらしい。
From the videos Patrick Chan seems to be a very nice young man. He can speak both English and French. I watched him talking in the both languages in an interview. He is cool.
パトリック選手、とっても性格がいいみたいですよ。
英語とフランス語話している姿見たら憧れましたね。
But besides the quads, I was much more impressed by Daisuke-kun’s figure skating. His artistry! He is a genius. What I like about him most is his innovative attitude toward figure skating. He always brings something new on the table. We can’t predict what he will bring next season. His creativity is beyond our imagination.
高橋選手は、なんていっても芸術性がすごい！
作品がどれも完成してるから、目が離せない。
いつも新しいものに挑戦する姿、尊敬します。
I posted three Youtube videos I’ve been watching over and over again for the last few weeks. None of the performances are perfect, but give me a lot of energy. Both Yuzuru-kun and Mao-chan were 17 years old when they did the performances. Daisuke-kun just turned 22.
I love to hear the British commentator say ‘Daisuki Takahashi’. Yes, we LOVE Takahashi!

I went to Maruzen the other day to buy Yuzuru-kun’s first book. I felt guilty about buying only my favorite book, so I went to the baseball section and bought two books which I thought would increase my son’s motivation and improve his batting skills.
結弦君の本購入しました。
久々のミーハー。ちょっと気がひけたので息子の野球本も2冊買いました。
Yuzuru-kun’s book is full of his pictures and it takes only 30 minutes to read it through. I’m not saying that it’s not worth buying or anything. All the royalty from the book goes to Sendai Ice rink. So you can support the future Olympic medallists anyway. And there ARE many things in the book I was surprised about and deeply impressed by. This is the book written by the 17-year-old bronze medallist at the 2012 World Championships. Of course there are many things you can learn about.
How can a high school student have such a high goal and have physical and mental strength to achieve it? What were you doing when you were 17? I was popping my zits. That’s all I remember.
本は、30分もあれば読めるんですが、内容もそれなりに面白い。
なんたって17歳で世界3位にまで上り詰めた子の発言ですから重みがあります。
自分が17歳の時何してたかな？ニキビ潰し・・・？
でも、羽入君にはニキビが全くない。ツルツルお肌。
この差は大きいな！
He wrote in the book that he does not lose to anyone when it comes to competitiveness. Wow! He IS competitive.
I ordered my son to read the book. He is only three years older than my son and has already reached the world-class level. My son showed no interest in reading it but I forced him to. Another fruitless educational trail was completed.
羽入君、負けず嫌いでは誰にも負けないそうです。
アスリートとしては、この負けん気の強さはmust。
「もう、お母さんがただ好きなだけやろっ！」と嫌がる野球少年の息子に強制的に読ませましたが、またもやこちらが伝えたいことは伝わらなかったようです。

Keep your dreams alive!
How did you spend the Golden week?
I stayed at home and prepared for the classes. Until the beginning of the summer holidays I have almost no time-off except Sundays, so I rolled up my sleeves and set to work to get some work done in advance.
ゴールデンウィークはいかがお過ごしでしたか。
私は家にこもって授業の予習。
これから夏休みまで怒涛のように休みなしで流れて行くので
早めの予習が大事。
Working as a part-time teacher is tough. It’s getting tougher than ever before. I work for four schools now and at one school every time when the class is over evaluation forms are handed out to students. That’s tough, isn’t it?
In the first teachers’ meeting in the late March this year a head teacher of one of the schools said to us teachers, “Never say things to students that take away their dreams. Those who did are dismissed from the next day. Our job is to encourage students to keep their dreams alive, not to discourage them.”
His remark woke me up and straightened up my back. This is the basics of education, isn’t it? We don’t have the right to take away students’ dreams.
非常勤講師はつらいもの。
何の職業でもそうですが、最近はアンケート評価用紙がすぐ配られて気が抜けませんね。
そんな中、生徒から夢を奪うような発言は絶対にしないようにと言われました。
ドキッ！
これは、相当ドキッとしました。
でも、本当にそうですよね。
こっちには、人の夢を奪う権利なんかどこにもないんですからね。

子どもは親の鏡
Have you ever heard about so-called ‘The teaching of Indian’ in Japan. The poem was written by Dorothy Law Notle in 1954.
I like this poem, but its Japanese translation bothers me. Specifically the part, “Katei-de sodatta” Why does the part need to be added? I know that family has a great impact on shaping kids’ character, but it’s not the only factor. There are many kids who came from a dysfunctional family but have a wonderful personality. And as a mother I am not going to take 100 percent responsibility for my kids’ characters.

この詩は、なんで日本では「インディアンの教え」ってことになってるんでしょうね。
確かに、parentingのことなので、「家庭で育った」という訳が入ってもいいんでしょうけど、私には違和感があるんです。何度も何度も「家庭で育った」が入るとカチ～～ン！ときます。
まあ、責任逃れしたいという私の気持ちのアガキかな。

Fish spa
I experienced fish spa this afternoon in Yufuin.
This unique spa is very popular among beauty-conscious women. The fish is called garalfa, which came originally from the spa in Turkey. The fish removes dead skin cells and make your skin smooth. The spa owner told me that this treatment is authorized in Germany as medical treatment.
It costs 1,000 yen for 15 minutes. And it works! My feet have become very smooth.
Very tickling, but the extent of tickling seems to be different from person to person. A young man in his early 20s sat next to me, and he couldn’t put his feet in the water for more than 10 seconds, because he felt a tickling so hard. He was very sensitive.
And embarrassing thing was that most of the fish came to me and only a few went to him. It proved my feet were covered with lots of dead skin cells! He asked me whether he could take a picture of my feet and the flocking garalfas. That’s embarrassing. But anyway, I thought the fish spa was worth a try.

このガラルファと呼ばれるお魚君達が、きれいに角質を取り除いてくれます。
隣に座った20代の若いお兄ちゃんの足には、あんまり魚が寄ってこなかったんで、気まずい思いをしました。
しかも、「写真撮ってもいいですか？」って言われるくらい魚が寄って来た時には、正直ちょっと落ち込みましたが、15分後には、なんかとっても足がすっきりした感じがしたんですよ。
一度お試しあれ！
